While implementing Krita 5.0 we had a sort of target in mind, which included a lot of features we wanted to add but couldn’t fit in. This resulted in us making Krita 5.0 a “feature-ready” snapshot release in some ways.

We have focused on getting some core functionality done, so that the features are as performant as possible. We have also worked on the stability and reliability of some core features. While work on some more features will continue, until Krita 5.1.0 this is a final release.

One of the biggest features we’ve been working on this year is the ability to export your paintings into either PSD, JPG, PNG or SIF format files. We’ve had this ability on our plugin-system for a long time now, but we’ve been unable to advertise it to artists because the export plugin didn’t have the same capabilities as the brushes. The most important feature of the export plugin is that it makes it possible to get the image out of Krita and into Photoshop, Gimp or other programs.

Now Krita includes an export feature that was written specifically for Krita and uses the system that we’ve been developing. It still is not in the same class as plugins of Photoshop (Photoshop can export multi-colored layers into a single file, while Krita will export a whole layer), but because it uses our internal format, it can be a drop-in replacement for old plugins, and also be much faster (especially for large files).

Eric Waldron worked extensively on the Brushes and Instruments, while Ryan W. Taylor worked on the Collection for realistic brushes. Mark E.
